Save money by conserving energy use and more! (See our Top Tips below!)
Top Energy Savings you can do at home
Tip 1 - Use appliances off-peak
Being aware of the Ontario time-of-use rates gives you the opportunity to avoid peak hours and reduce your monthly utilities. The price difference is so significant that it can get more than two times higher from off-peak hours to peak hours!
Tip 2 - Wash laundry in cold water
Not only can it can help preserve the color and quality of your garments over time, during the summer months, washing in cold water can also help reduce your energy bills by requiring less hot water usage.
Tip 3 - Air-dry your laundry
A 2023 study suggests that air-drying clothing can reduce your climate impact by up to 67%, with machine-drying clothing accounting for around 75% of laundry’s total carbon footprint.
Tip 4 - Turn off lights
Reducing your energy usage by turning off your lights is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint. Electricity generation is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.
Tip 5 - Replace Bulbs with LED’s
ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs are up to 90% more efficient than incandescent bulbs, and they last at least 15 times longer. No question, installing LED bulbs will help you save money on your energy bill and you can say goodbye to constantly buying replacement bulbs.
Tip 6 - Programmable Thermostat
Every step towards using less energy contributes to a smaller carbon footprint, and programmable thermostats play a significant role in this endeavor. By optimizing heating and cooling systems to run only when needed, these devices reduce the overall energy consumption of a household.
Tip 7 - Keep Air Filters/Ducts clean
Cleaning the ducts regularly keep the air filters working well. It makes the air flow better and your heating and cooling system run more efficiently. Clean air filters are essential for capturing pollutants and preventing them from recirculating through your home.
Tip 8 - Find and seal drafts
Drafts and more air flowing in means your HVAC system has to work a little harder to maintain your home's temperature. That means higher energy bills for you. Seal your windows, and you won't have that problem. In fact, you'll have more money in your pocket.
Tip 9 - Unplug minimal use appliances
Energy experts estimate that approximately 10 percent of the average household electric bill is due to phantom energy loads, and by making some small changes you can instantly reduce your monthly payments.
